Kokkari-Samos Kokkari-Samos

Samos is an island ruled by legend and beauty. It is the island of the father of mathematics, Pythagoras, the astronomer Aristarchus and the philosopher Epicurus. It is the home of Hera and the land that hosted Herodotus and Aesop. An important center of trade in the Aegean and a major naval force in antiquity, it came into contact with important Mediterranean cultures.

Samos is a place of overwhelming vegetation. Everything around the virgin landscape is made of colour and light. Each step one takes is a revelation. Whether in the imposing mountains, such as Mt. Kerkis and Mt. Ambelos – with alpine winter temperatures and endless rain – or in caves and canyons, the environment of Samos reminds one of the Greek hinterland in miniature

The coastal village of Kokkari is situated 10km. northwest from the town of Samos. It is the third largest resort on the island with a population of approximately 1,500 inhabitants.

Kokkari is the most picturesque fishing harbor of Samos, where two small capes form a tiny bay.
It is believed that the name of the village derives from the many onions produced here, («kokkari» in Greek means small onion). Another opinion is that it derives from the name of its first settler.

Today, Kokkari retains its traditional nature, having some of the most beautiful beaches. A short distance to the west are the beaches of Tsamandou and
Lemonakia with crystal clear waters. Exposed and windy, there are a favorite location for all windsurfers.
The waterfront is lined with tavernas and bars. There are also several small hotels scattered around the village.

Samos is mountainous with two major mountains, that of Kerkis and the one of Ambelos. Thanks to their existence there are many rainfalls during winter, resulting to the presence of rich vegetation and freshwater springs. That explains the ancient name of Samos, «Hydrele», which in Greek means «rich in water».
The beaches of the island are famous for their beautiful, sandy shorelines and their crystal blue waters, in combination with the evergreen surroundings. Here, tourists can enjoy different water-sports, such as windsurfing.

Samos offers a great number of hotel resorts, restaurants, cafeterias and nightclubs. Additionally, the island produces various products, the most famous ones being the Samian oil, soap and wine. (The latter is even exported to France).
