2,187 immigrants in Greece were returned to their homelands in December 2014. 2,187 immigrants in Greece were returned to their homelands in December 2014.

The immigrants were deported for illegally entering the country. Costs were covered by the International Organisation of Migration.

923 people returned to Albania, 276 to Pakistan, 115 to Georgia, 64 to Afghanistan and 63 to Iraq (among them Kurds). During 2014, 27,789 foreigners living in Greece were repatriated, while in 2013 the figure was 26,186.

The immigrants had entered Greece illegally in order to seek asylum or to emigrate to other countries in Europe. Greece is unable to support the vast number of immigrants entering daily from Turkey.

The economic and political situation since 2009 has been difficult and now in 2015 the situation has reached an impasse. There are over 2 million immigrants in the country, many of them unemployed or without the necessary legal papers. In the last two years many Greeks have emigrated to other European countries for a better life.

Migrants unable to travel to other countries return to their homelands.
